Woodwark House

This low-set home in the Whitsundays was designed as a forever home for clients seeking comfort, longevity and a strong connection to climate and place. Planned to support ageing in place, the house favours generosity where it matters most rather than unnecessary size, resulting in a home that feels calm, open and larger than its efficient footprint.

A clerestory lantern over the living space defines the heart of the home and plays a key role in its passive performance. Operable electronic glass louvres allow warm air to rise and escape, supporting the stack effect and drawing breezes through the house. Together with the thermal mass of the concrete slab, this creates a passively cooled home that rarely requires air conditioning.

The design responds to the tropical conditions of the Whitsundays through shaded outdoor edges, deep overhangs, generous glazing and a strong indoor-outdoor relationship. Planter boxes reinforce the clients’ love of gardening and are integrated as part of the spatial design, reducing the need for conventional balustrades in selected areas.

Materiality was approached with restraint and honesty. Hot dip galvanised steel posts, polished concrete, engineered pine beams, plywood ceilings and locally sourced hardwood timber are allowed to speak for themselves, with many finishes clear coated to celebrate their natural texture and tone.

Influenced by the enduring principles of mid-century modern architecture, the house draws on simple roof forms, a clear grid, window walls and the expressive use of materials, reinterpreted here as a contemporary tropical design response for the Whitsundays.

Designed to display art, objects and a life of travel, the home is both highly personal and highly practical, a place made not for excess, but for long-term living, comfort and future memories.
