My passion is designing quality residential homes in a unique natural environment. Modern tropical design, responsive to the environment in which the house is sited. I work as a solo practitioner to ensure consistency of the concept, design and communication. I choose to work on selected projects rather than a large volume of work to ensure I can maintain focus in a single area to achieve great project outcomes.

When designing a building, I believe that the design should create a comfortable and positive experience within the natural environment in which it is placed. This is achieved through respect for the site, positive lighting and ventilation strategies, and apertures that highlight and focus attention on the beauty of the land and ocean.

Outside of work hours I enjoy exploring urban and natural environments. Above and below water. In Australia and Internationally. I have travelled to Asia, North and South America, Europe and Africa to observe some of the world’s great buildings, and witness the effect building design has on people in the manner they live and experience their environment.

My path to practice commenced in 2010, working for a design office in Cairns as a cadet draftsman. During this time, I completed a diploma of building design. Upon completion of my diploma, I continued to work as a designer in Cairns for a building design office, Myriad Design and a local architect, DB Arch. I gained experience working on a vast range of projects including; residential housing, remote Cape York housing and infrastructure, schools, large commercial buildings and shop fitouts.

In 2017 I relocated to the Whitsundays and established my own practice, Louis Jackson Design. This coincided with my decision to pursue a career focused on residential housing. Shortly after, I enrolled in Central Queensland Universities Bachelor of Building Design which I completed in the beginning of 2023.

I have been fortunate to have learned and developed my abilities through the many clients, builders, consultants, lecturers and friends that I have worked with through the years. Most of all I owe a great deal of gratitude to my partner Gabrielle and my two main mentors, Stuart Jackson and Chris Beckingham. All of those who have contributed have played a significant role in shaping the position I find myself in today, allowing me to live and work designing houses in an environment I love.
